My Analysis On “Ayelet Waldman on Amy Chua’s ‘Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother’”

There are certainly glaring differences in the mothering leadership styles of Ms. Chua and Ms. Waldman. But, a subtle and foundational distinction between them also becomes apparent with a little digging by the reader. Two are described here (there are more). The density of self-referentials (I, me, we, myself, my, our and us) in Ms. Walderman’s piece is 1.5 greater. And Ms. Walderman fobbed the pain of mothering off to a tutor and even at that she begged her child to quit rather than bear the pain (for a whole month, mind you) as her child leaned to read. In other words, Ms. Waldman is a self-oriented mother while Ms. Chau is a child-oriented mother. Their differences of (mothering) styles pale in comparison.
